Building a place to build

I research, build, try, use, and think about all kinds of things. Along the way I make notes, explanations, experiments, decisions, tools, and ideas worth returning to. This platform gives that work a home and a ready-made path for publishing or delivering whatever comes next.

A person and a tool together can do things the person alone cannot. A pencil gives thought somewhere to persist outside the mind, where it can be examined, revised, and shared. Software can do the same at a different scale.

This platform is part of that working system: an extension of my memory and reach. I don’t think of it as a company website or a polished monument to a finished body of work. It’s closer to a workbench.

The platform itself is also one of the projects. I’m building it carefully enough to learn from the process—security, source control, automated testing, previews, deployment, and publishing—and documenting the parts worth sharing.

A useful finish line

Sharing some of the work gives me a goal and a reason to turn rough material into something coherent enough for another person to understand, question, and perhaps use. It creates a finish line and a chance to discover whether the work matters beyond its original purpose.

Karlthoughts

Karlthoughts is where I put whatever comes to mind or seems worth sharing in written form.

It might be a blog post, an instruction manual, a project journal, a random note, or a passing thought. The name is intentionally broad because I don’t know exactly what it will become, and I don’t want to decide too early. We’ll find out as it evolves.

The spirit is “strong opinions, loosely held”: I can say what I think and why without pretending it’s a universal rule or a permanent conclusion. A personal experience can be real without becoming a prescription for everyone, and changing my mind is part of learning rather than a failure of consistency.

What may show up here

My interests don’t fit neatly into one category, and I don’t want the platform to force them to. They’ll change over time, too, so this isn’t meant to be a complete list.

For now, you may find:

• accounts of projects I am building, including this site;
• tools and practical systems that began with a problem I actually had;
• apple orcharding, cider making, vegetable gardening, technology, and other hands-on experiments;
• personal finance, account systems, and practical automation;
• curated research and compendiums;
• explorations into software, AI, creativity, and knowledge;
• humor and playful experiments that may be educational, strange, useful, or simply delightful.

How I want to write

I tend to be thorough. If the details help explain what happened, why I made a choice, or how something works, I’d rather include them than polish the story down to a neat summary.

I also don’t want to edit away the useful wrong turns. When a mistake, reversal, or discarded alternative teaches something or helps explain the result, I’d rather preserve it and say what changed than present a falsely smooth path.

Tools may help with research, criticism, implementation, and editing. They’re part of how I work, not the subject of everything I make.

A small disclaimer

These are my working conclusions, not commandments smuggled onto the internet in paragraph form.

I’ll tell you what I do, what I currently think, and why. You remain responsible for deciding what survives contact with your own goals and circumstances. I also reserve the right to learn something and become less wrong later.
